New Paediatric Divisions, and deepening our cooperation with Montenegro at UEMS 2026 Autumn Council

At its Autumn Council in Brussels on 16–17 October, the first two Divisions within the UEMS Section of Paediatrics were unanimously approved:

-            Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and

-            Paediatric Haemato-Oncology.

Together with an updated European Training Requirement (ETR) for Paediatrics and three for paediatric subspecialties, these steps create a structure for paediatric subspecialties to collaborate on training and professional standards within UEMS.

The Council also recognised colleagues whose contributions have shaped UEMS.

Professor Nada Čikeš became the first woman to receive UEMS Honorary Membership, in recognition of her work on the ETR framework and the ETR Review Committee.

Professor Romuald Krajewski was also appointed an Honorary Member for his longstanding commitment to European medical cooperation.

The UEMS Commendation of Honour was awarded to Dr Wim Janssen. Six UEMS Gold Badges of Honour were presented to Dr Wagih Aclimandos, Dr Ruth Brown, Dr Patrick Magennis, Professor Alenka Škerjanc, Dr Ute Moog and Professor Peter Turnpenny.

The meeting also marked a step towards closer international collaboration. UEMS signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Medical Chamber of Montenegro, its newest Associate Member. Shared interests include medical and postgraduate training, EACCME, ETRs, examinations and the accreditation of training centres.

UEMS also welcomed a delegation from the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan to explore opportunities for future cooperation.

Last but not least, UEMS approved nine European Training Requirements (ETRs). These approvals bring the total adopted in 2026 to a record of 17 ETRs and one Postgraduate Training Document (PDM), making 18 training documents in all.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Brussels and contributed to these achievements.
